Saint Sava (1175 or 1176 - January 12, 1235 or 1236), originally the prince Rastko Nemanjic (son of the Serbian king Stefan Nemanja and brother of Stefan Prvovencani, founder of the Serbian medieval state), is the first Serb archbishop (1219-1233) and the most important saint in the Serbian Orthodox Church.
Saint Sava is celebrated as the founder of the independent Serbian Orthodox Church and as patron saint of education and medicine among Serbs. His day is observed on January 27th of the Gregorian calendar (January 14th of the neo-Julian calendar still observed by the Serbian Church). Since the 1830's, Saint Sava has become the patron saint of Serb schools and schoolchildren. On his day, students partake in recitals in church.
The temple of Saint Sava in Belgrade, whose construction was planned in 1939, begun in 1985 and awaits completion by 2004 is the largest active Orthodox temple in the world today.
Thou O' sacred head, most glorious wonder-worker, Sava, hierarch of Christ, thou first in rank among the bishops of Serbia, protector and enlightener, trustworthy intercessor for all Christians before the Lord: we fall own before thee and pray: grant us to partake of thy love for God and neighbor, the love with which, in life, thy holy soul overflowed.
Shed the rays of truth upon us, enlighten our mind and heart with the light of Divine teaching, teach us to be thy faithful in imitating thee, so as to love God and our neighbor and to perform the Lord's commandments without error, so that we too might be thy children not only in name, but in our whole life.
Look down in thy loving kindness on each and every soul of those who honor thee in faith, seeking thy mercy and help; be unto us all a healer in our infirmities, a consoler in our sorrows, a visitor in our grief, a helper in our troubles and needs, and in the hour of our death, a merciful protector and defender, so that, aided by thy holy prayers, we sinners might be vouchsafed to inherit the salvation of the faithful and the Kingdom of Christ.
Dying Easter Eggs--the Natural way!
This Easter, why not color your eggs using nature's very own dyes?
It's possible to come up with a great number of colors using natural ingredients
that can easily be found in almost any kitchen.
Pale Red: Fresh beets or cranberries, frozen raspberries
Orange: Yellow onion skins
Light yellow: Orange or lemon peels, carrot tops, celery seed or ground cumin
Yellow: Ground turmeric
Pale green: Spinach leaves
Green-gold: Yellow Delicious apple peels
Blue: Canned blueberries or red cabbage leaves
Beige to brown: Strong brewed coffee
To dye the perfect Easter eggs the natural way, here's what to do:
1. Put eggs in a single layer in a pan. Pour water in pan until the eggs are covered.
2. Add about a teaspoon of vinegar.
3. Add the natural dye appropriate to the color you want your eggs to be.
(The more eggs you are dying at a time, the more dye you will need to use.)
4. Bring water to a boil, then reduce heat and simmer for 15 minutes.
5. Remove the substance you used to color the eggs. Put eggs in a bowl.
If you want your eggs to be a darker shade, cover them with the dye and let
them stand overnight in the refrigerator.

A Great Cooking Idea for Lent
President's choice... Salt N Malt (POSNO!). Breaded cod pieces that
you bake in the oven. Oven to 425, throw the frozen pieces in (each box
has about 10 pieces, information for you family folks)... and bake for 25
minutes. They come out crispy
outside, super tender inside.
Another thing that's been really helpful has been to cook of 1 or 2
cups of basmati rice. Let it cool and then put the
cooked rice in the fridge.
Inevitably time is of the essence as the week
goes on... so here's a 5 minute side dish. Small skillet, a little bit of
sesame oil heating on a medium high setting. Add some grated fresh
ginger allow it to flavour the oil, then add a handful of sugar snap
or snow peas, tossing them in the oil and ginger until tender but still
crispy. Add one or two handfuls of the already cooked rice and then
two or three ounces of soy. Better still add Mrs. Bragg's soy (health
food store). Saute... serve... enjoy!
Last thing is Yves Italian ground round (vegetarian soy) and make an
Italian style tomato based pasta or rice sauce.

St. Sava Choir will perform a music piece written by Aleksa Santic
Our director Nikola Manojlovic included in our repertoire
a song of a great Serbian poet Aleksa Santic – Ajd’ u kolo.
It was amazing to experience our director’s exaltation when talking about this piece and his enthusiasm when he taught us the first notes of this piece of music.
Aleksa Santic was a visionary and romanticist,
but at the same time a great loser in his private life.
The poet was born in a strict patriarchal,
rich trading family from Mostar, in a
conservative social environment,
during controversial times in the end of
the XIX and beginning of the XX century.
In his mature years, Aleksa Santic engaged himself
passionately in the social and political life of his time.
Disappointments, poverty, sickness and loneliness followed as well as the certainty of early death.
