Introduce Yourself - Marina Daoust

I think that singing is freedom- it is an absolute way to express yourself, but it is also very enlightening to the heart. It can be such a relaxing exercise...

My favorite music genre I really don't have one. If I had to choose, I would probably say classical music, particularly baroque. I enjoy a certain aspect of every type of music that I am listening to and I can say that it depends on my mood. I like Stevan Mokranjac, and I also like to listen to beautiful nuances from recordings from our concerts. I also like people like Zeljko Joksimovic -very up beat Serbian stuff. I think whatever you are in the mood for you enjoy at that particular time - it is hard to define.

My choral music experience. I was made to join a choir back home when I was grade 5- it was just a school choir and I sang with choirs through my education and then joined St. Sava Choir in 1977.

I think that singing is freedom - it is an absolute way to express yourself, but it is also very enlightening to the heart. It can be such a relaxing exercise. Performing makes me feel creative. It gives me great pleasure and relaxes me.
I remember how I joined our choir. It was in our church for Bozic one year and the choir was singing. I was listening to them and I thought - what a wonderful opportunity. I went up to the priest, he sent me to Nick, and he told me to ask John. I said that I d' like to join the choir and they asked me if I can sing. I said : "Yes, kind of " , and they told me to come on Tuesday for practice.

Being part of a choir is absolutely incredible. The choir is like my family. We are a group of people that have things in common and things we don't have in common, but it is absolutely wonderful to have such a broad spectrum of different ages - it is like having additional grandparents, uncles and aunts, relatives... Alone that is worth it. Traveling with the choir, and interacting with new people, is also a part I enjoy a lot. I just came back from the choral workshop last week in Pennsylvania. I met people from California and Arizona. We are all Serbs and choir singers and that is what we have in common. And even though we are different people, we still can have fun, we can interact and share stories. It is an absolutely amazing experience

How to make our choir better better organzied ?The question regarding how to make our choir better organized and more attractive is the question that I wake up to and go to bed at the night with. The board is going to come up with some more ideas about how we can attract more people and keep current members. I don't know that we necessarily want to become more professional. We are here to sing to the glory of God, to support each other.

Our new CD The original idea behind the cd was to have it recorded by November the 19th, in order to do some Christmas songs at our annual concert as a promotion. I would love to have some Christmas concerts after church between November and January just to raise awareness, and to let people know that we released a CD with Christmas songs. We are actively looking into finding government funding or large sponsors for our trip to Serbia - I cannot tell whether we are successful yet, but we realized that it is not reasonable to sell coffee to raise money to buy tickets. This has to be a much larger endeavour.
