Sounds Like Canada - Friday, April 9, 2004

Nik Manojlovich, host of the television show "Savoir Faire", shares his other passion - directing a Toronto Serbian orthodox choir for the liturgical music of Holy week.

An excerpt of Nik Manojlovich’s interview for Sounds Like Canada ( ) on Friday April 9, 2004 presenting Eastern Orthodox Church music for Holy Week and Easter, where he also talked about St. Sava Choir

Shelagh Rogers: Now you have a choir. And I’d love to hear about your choir.

Nik Manojlovich: We are 56 voices. We sing every Sunday and on feast days at the Serbian All Saints Church on Dixie Road north of the QEW. The church was recently consecrated. And our choir is not as professional as maybe some that you’ve heard but our spirit is there.
We’re so dedicated , they’re such a wonderful bunch and they will be on time on Easter Sunday morning (laugh) even though we’ll all be devouring  Easter eggs and eating, you know, bread and our meats since this long fast but they’re a wonderful, wonderful group of people . I love them dearly. It’s pretty special.

Shelagh Rogers: Tell me, I don’t know how to get you to capture this but, this music is so beautiful to listen to, what’s the experience of singing it ?

Nik Manojlovich:It’s so rewarding because you’re at once kind of, you’re transported, you are facilitating a conversation with God. The priest begins the Liturgy: blessed is the Kingdom of the Lord, the choir will answer with Amen and then starts this dialogue, where the choir facilitates the responses of the people. So the priests and the community follow through a Divine Liturgy that will run two hours. Which is souly an offering of praise to God . At the end of it Shelagh, you’ve this sung together, you’ve prayed together , you’ve struggled through difficult musical pieces, you walk out of church and you just feel like a million bucks. That’s what the reward is I think. Does that make sense?

Shelagh Rogers:

It certainly does and just that the idea of transformation and transcendence, like almost getting right out of yourself. Right?
