News - 51st Annual Concert -

November 18th, 2006 - report by Alex brkich

Good friends, lively song, warm hearts, describe the atmosphere of our Serbian Centre this past weekend, November 18th and 19th. We, the St. Sava Choir, hosted our 51st annual concert weekend, and called upon our friends to join in the celebration. The guests for the Saturday evening concert were the the S.S.S. Gracanica Choir from Windsor and the St. Roman Melod Choir from Kitchener . The lovely MC for the evening, our own Lidija Borojevic, introduced the choirs who performed religious pieces and traditional Serbian folk songs for the audience. As is customary at the end of every concert, the choirs wished each other "mnogaja ljeta." It was apparent to all the guests that evening, that with each passing year, the bonds of friendship between these choirs continue to grow. Immediately following the concert programme, Dragan Maklenov and his orchestra had everyone on its feet, dancing kolo and singing Serbian songs into the wee hours.

The next morning, the S.S.S. Gracanica Choir sang responses during holy liturgy, while we prepared a luncheon for our guests. Our Very Reverend Mihajlo Doder was so taken by the beauty of the Gracanica Choir's rendition of the Beatitudes, that he asked its choir director to send him the sheet music in hopes our St. Sava Choir might add it to our repertoire. During the Sunday afternoon banquet which was attended by many of our parishioners, Bora Dragasevic, honorary president of our St. Sava Choir, recounted how the history between the two choirs goes back more than 50 years. Very Reverend Mihajlo Doder and our choir president also took the podium to speak about our community's connection to the Windsor community and choir members. Windsor choir president, Vladimir Bajic, concluded the speeches by presenting our choir with a generous donation, and thanking us for organizing a very successful weekend.

As anyone who has hosted an event knows, it requires a lot of work to ensure it is successful. To our guest choirs, thank you for being part of our choir family. To our guests who attended the Saturday night concert and our Sunday banquet, your support is appreciated beyond words. To our sponsors (who can be found highlighted on our choir website), we are truly grateful for your financial contributions to our ongoing activities. To all the choir members who sang, cooked, sold bar and admission tickets, worked the bar, cleaned up after the event and did whatever was asked of them, thank you! Finally, and most importantly, a huge "thank you" must be given to St. Sava Choir President Marina Milivojevic-Daoust and her ever patient husband Marc. This year's concert is now over, so kick back and relax, at least until the activities around Advent take hold...you deserve it!
